A health fair geared toward seniors drew a small crowd to the South Hall Community Center Tuesday.

Marci Summer, manager of the community center, said the second annual Active Generation Health Fair provided free blood pressure checks, healthy snacks and auditory information to folks 55 and older. Health fair participants received information about the services available to seniors through Hall County resources.

Since 1963, the national Administration on Aging has named May as Older Americans Month, which celebrates seniors living in communities nationwide and encourages local governments to reach out to the aging population with opportunities to better their lives.

Summer said the fair highlighted the Meals on Wheels program, Red Rabbit transportation and Hall Area Transit.

"You can get appointments with Hall Area Transit if you have a doctor’s appointment you need to get to," Summer said. "You can call them ahead of time and they’ll come pick you up and take you to your doctor’s appointment and then take you home."

She said Legacy Link is a senior advocacy program that serves multiple counties in North Georgia, including Hall.

Legacy Link provides legal and employment services to seniors, as well as Alzheimer’s disease family education programs. Financial guidance programs are also available to seniors through Legacy Link, and they have a program that helps seniors to live safely in their homes longer.

"It’s important for seniors to know there are resources available to them, especially as things get difficult for them with driving," Summer said. "They need to know meals can be delivered to their home, that someone can take them to the doctor and that there are opportunities for them to socialize with other seniors."
