Calling all actors: The theater awaits

Gainesville alliance sets workshop, auditions for 2 upcoming productions

POSTED: August 18, 2011 12:30 a.m.

The Gainesville Theatre Alliance is not only offering local thespians the opportunity to show off their acting skills, the group is also helping actors fine tune their talents.

Prior to auditions for two productions, "Hairspray" and "James and the Giant Peach," the alliance will play host to a free audition workshop.

The GTA Audition Workshop is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brenau University's John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts, 429 Academy St., Gainesville.

"We host the workshop every year for our theater students and since we are anxious for more community members to come out to the auditions, we thought it would be a good idea to open the workshop up to anyone who was interested," said Beth Kendall, GTA marketing manager.

GTA is a collaboration between Gainesville State College, Brenau University, theater professionals and other community members.

Just as they would for auditions, workshop attendees should wear clothing that allows for movement.

The actual GTA auditions for "Hairspray" are set for 6-10 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Burd Center. For that production, staff will be looking to fill 12 male and 14 female roles with performers between the ages of 18 to 50.

For "Hairspray" auditions, performers should dress for movement. They should also bring sheet music and be prepared to sing for about 30 seconds. This production will run from Nov. 8-19.

"James and the Giant Peach" will open the GTA season and run from Sept. 29 through Oct. 8. The show's director will be looking to fill five or six adult roles and three or four nonspeaking children's roles.

Auditions will be held from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at Brenau University's Pearce Auditorium, 500 Washington St., Gainesville. These auditions will have an emphasis on script reading and group movement.

Individuals interested in auditioning for either or both productions must call the GTA office during regular business hours and make an appointment.

"They need to have an appointment to audition," Kendall said.

"With one phone call, they can sign up for either or both (productions)."
