Bikers ante up for fun, prizes, charity

Poker run takes riders through scenic North Ga. in search of best hand

POSTED: August 18, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Motorcycle enthusiasts can take in beautiful scenery and enjoy some of the best riding in North Georgia when the Georgia Chapter D of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association holds a poker run Aug. 20.

"This poker run is the type of event that is very big in the motorcycle community," chapter director Terri Kozlowski said.

Cyclists will meet up at Riders Hill in Dahlonega to register and collect their first card beginning at 9:30 a.m. Riders will cover over 60 miles as they make stops in Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer and Pickens counties, Kozlowski says.

After leaving Dahlonega, bikers will make stops at Cooper's Creek Station in Suches, a rural destination along the banks of the Toccoa River, The Apple House in Jasper and finally end at R&R Trikes in Jasper.

At each of the five stops along the route, participants will collect a card. The player with the best five-card hand of the day will receive a $250 cash prize.

Additionally, there will be door prizes and a 50-25-25 drawing. Lunch will be provided at the last stop.

"It's fun for everyone. We even have a $50 prize for the worst hand of the day," Kozlowski said. "Even if you don't win, it's a great ride. And it's all for a good cause."

Proceeds from the poker run go to support The Hugs Project for active duty military personnel.

The poker run is open to all makes and models of bikes. Kozlowski encourages anyone who wants to support the troops to take part.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the last bike will be on the road 11 a.m. Riders Hill is located 3003 Morrison Moore Parkway in Dahlonega. Registration for the run is $10 per hand.
