Alcohol sales training program set

Participants learn about fake IDs and the law

POSTED: August 7, 2011 11:41 p.m.

Alcohol vendors and servers in Hall County can learn alcohol serving laws and how to spot a fake ID at a program scheduled Thursday.

The Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service Program is set for 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the second floor training room of the Hall County Courthouse annex.

“It is aimed at the owners, managers ... of the licensed alcohol vendors and servers,” said J.P. Banks, project coordinator for the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County.

The program works to limit alcohol sales to minors and in turn reduce the number of wrecks those minors are involved in.

“Anything we can do to educate people, particularly the licensed servers, to educate them and ensure they are not serving or selling alcohol to minors, that’s our primary objective,” Banks said.

Participants will get an overview of alcohol serving laws, as well as the consequences of serving minors.

They will also be taught how to properly check identification and recognize a false identification.

Banks said the program is a combination of lecture and hands-on training. The participants will receive a workbook to complete during the course of the program.

“It’s not just a lecture class, it’s definitely an interactive class,” he said.

Vendors and servers who participate in the program can benefit in many ways.

“In Hall County, they include an incentive for people to attend such training as this,” Banks said. “Should they mess up and have a violation for selling to a minor their penalty would not be as great because they’ve actually made the effort to understand the law and receive training.”

Any vendor or server interested in participating in the program can contact Leanne Mulherin at 404-223-2482.

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs received a grant from the Georgia Office of Highway Safety to fund the program.
