Congress should give control of health care decisions back to us

POSTED: July 16, 2011 1:00 a.m.

It is troubling that some in Washington want to cut spending in Medicaid and Medicare across the board.

For years, we have asked Congress to eliminate the medical bias in long-term care services that force people with disabilities and seniors into nursing homes. Congress should reform the system to decrease health care costs, and allow people more control with their health care decisions, implementing more consumer-directed service options and eliminating wasteful bureaucratic duplication.

Realigning the system to place greater emphasis on necessary and functional needs would solve some of the problem, but eliminating funding would only place more burden on families and unpaid caregivers.

By refusing to take a balanced approach, certain lawmakers are playing Russian roulette with our economy and the world's financial system, and if the president fails, we all fail.

They need to start focusing on the good of all Americans and not just the wealthy or the next election.
