Helen flaunts its 'Vibrant Colors' at new exhibit

POSTED: July 14, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Taking in the colors of North Georgia doesn't have to mean a hike through the woods. Instead, take a cool stroll through the gallery at the Helen Arts and Heritage Center.

"Vibrant Colors," an exhibit that opens today at the Helen Arts and Heritage Center, will feature the work of Helen residents Connie Gilbert and Pat Rodovich.

"I do oils, and I do acrylics. I do the local scenes, but on this particular show, it's really fun. They're abstract and just full of amazing color," said Gilbert, whose paintings will be on display.

"Very bright and vibrant colors, so we're just following the show theme."

"All of the other artists who belong to the gallery will also be bringing in new work," Gilbert said.

Gilbert has been painting since age 16. She studied interior design and art education at Florida State University.

Rodovich, whose pottery also will be featured in the show, took her first pottery class after retiring from a banking career.

She attended North Georgia College & State University and studied under Matt Henderson, a resident potter at Mark of the Potter.

Rodovich is continuing her education at the HAHC, learning from Hilton Hill, who heads the center's pottery studio.

The HAHC began about four years ago in the former location of Helen City Hall and hosts several member exhibits throughout the year. The center also offers art classes for children and adults.

"Vibrant Colors" will open today with a reception that will feature wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres.
