History meets Lanier for a day of family fun

POSTED: July 7, 2011 1:30 a.m.

The history of Lake Lanier is often taken for granted. Many people have heard stories and folklore about what lies beneath the surface of the water, but few know the story of how the lake came to be.

The Northeast Georgia History Center is hosting a family day this weekend, and Sunday’s family day theme is "Lore of the Lake."

Visitors will have the opportunity to hear a description of the Department of Natural Resource’s role and responsibilities regarding the lake.

According to Julie Carson, education and volunteer coordinator for the center, the history will be the main focus, but there will be fun for everyone.

"We’re focusing not only on the history, but also some of the recreation associated with our lake," Carson said.

Activities will include a Lake Lanier fishing game, home-made ice cream, watermelon seed-spitting "contest" and crafts. In addition, there will be exhibits by Lake Lanier Rowing Club and Gainesville State College.

GSC professors Dee Gillespie and J.B. Sharma have been working on an extensive project to record the history of the lake, and will be presenting a small showing of their work. The two will talk extensively about the project on Tuesday at the History Center.

"It’s a great way to take advantage of an opportunity to learn about our lake. We hope families will come out and spend part of their Sunday afternoon here," Carson said.

"Lake Lanier is such an important part of life here. It makes such an important impact on the area, both economically and recreationally," Carson said.

The Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University is located at 322 Academy Street in Gainesville. The family day event will take place from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
