Chances are if you grew up in the 1980s, you’re familiar with the singing, dancing and drama of the hit television show "Fame."

The show centered around the antics of students at a performing arts high school in New York. "Fame" had two runs on the big screen in film form, but tomorrow it will take a spin on the stage of the Historic Holly Theatre in Dahlonega.

"Our show is very heavy in musical numbers," said Geoffrey Kridel, the Holly’s executive director.

"It’s a really exciting production, but we tried to keep our show a little less graphic than perhaps it has been in the movie and such. Ours is a little more family suitable."

Kridel says it has been at least five years since the Holly has produced the musical. He says the current pool of talent in The Holly Theater Performance Academy sparked interest in a revival.

"Out of more than 2,000 groups, they won two of five top awards (at a national competition), so with that under their belts, we thought it was time to do something more aggressive," Kridel said.

"This is a pretty hearty show."

The academy gives performers ages 3 to 18 the opportunity to "learn, rehearse and perform live on stage." Besides "Fame," other productions by the young performers includes "Aesop’s Fables," "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

Audiences will be able to enjoy "Fame" through July 17, with 7 p.m. performances on Fridays and Saturdays and a 3 p.m. performance on Sundays at the Holly, 69 West Main St., Dahlonega.

Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased in advance at the theater or online at www.hollytheater.com. They will also be available the day of the show at the theater’s box office, which opens one hour before the scheduled performance.
