Hundreds of North Georgia residents will ignite their of Independence Day celebration at the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra's Patriotic Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Brenau University's Amphitheatre.

"We perform our Patriotic Pops Concert every year at Brenau University's Amphitheatre, said Micki Norman, assistant director of Gainesville Symphony Orchestra. "It has always been a big success for the organization, and we consistently hear feedback from our patrons that it is one of their favorite events."

Attendants to the annual outdoor tradition will experience a spectacular array of entertainment including a new acoustic pre-show starting at 6:30 p.m. featuring Pocket Dreams andnoted guitarist, Wayde Powell.

Gates open at 6 p.m., and guests may bring lawn chairs and picnics. This concert kicks off the annual GSO symphonic season and welcomes the arrival of newly appointed music director, Lauren Green.

"Lauren has put together an amazing program that has a great mix of classical and contemporary pieces for the Patriotic Pops so there is something for everyone," Norman said. "We are extremely excited to announce that he will be our music director for our 2011-12 season."

Norman notes the decision to bring Green back was "because he is noted not only for his abilities on the podium, guiding the orchestra and audience through exciting musical performances, but also for the unique way he creates concert experiences through innovative programming and accessible presentation."

On Sunday, the orchestra of 43 — and countless volunteers — will present a selection of patriotic tunes from composers such as Sousa, Mancini, Custer, Cohan and more, and as night falls, sparklers will illuminate the skies.
