With so many Independence Day celebrations and activities going on at various sites this weekend, it can be difficult to choose where to go.

But nearby Tallulah Gorge State Park is offering something a little different for folks interested in outdoor activities. Holiday Gorge Floor Hikes will be held from Friday through Monday at the park.

Interpretive Ranger West Malenke will lead the expeditions to the bottom of the gorge.

"Basically, I'll highlight the history of the gorge. I'll talk about how the gorge formed over time, and what changes are still taking place," Malenke said.

"On the hike down, I'll point out different geological aspects, and help the hikers identify rocks and sediment and such."

Malenke pointed out that gorge floor hikes are a holiday weekend tradition. The park offers the hikes during Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.

"It's a great opportunity to get outside and really see the gorge, up close and personal," Malenke said.

Space is limited to 30 people per hike, so Malenke and the staff encourage participants to register in advance. He says Saturday's group is already full.

"So far, Saturday is the only day that we have been booked up for. But people need to register as soon as possible, because these hikes have generally filled up quickly in the past," Malenke said.

Malenke pointed out that hikers need to bring proper hiking footwear, not flip-flops or Crocs. Additionally, hikers should bring a lunch and plenty of water for the strenuous, four-hour hike.

The guided hikes will depart from the Interpretive Center at the park at 2:30 p.m. daily. For more information and to make advance registrations, call 706-754-7981. For more information and to register in advance, call 706-754-7981.
