Piedmont offers camp for budding artists

POSTED: June 16, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Piedmont College's theater and art departments have organized a unique experience for budding actors and artists.

Beginning Monday, the college will play host to a weeklong art and theater camp for area students.

"These camps are an outreach to the surrounding communities," said Natalie Crawford, the college's director of fine arts marketing and audience development.

"We firmly believe in the importance of the proliferation of the arts and we are in a unique position to offer top quality experiences to children who might otherwise never get such an opportunity."

The camps are being lead by Piedmont art and theater department chairmen Chris Kelly and Bill Gabelhausen.

The theater camp is being co-hosted by the Habersham Community Theatre. During that camp, students will spend their mornings working on improvisation, monologue development, script analysis and stage movement. After lunch, the students will on their performances for a production they will stage at the end of the camp,

Art camp participants will work on their painting, photography, ceramics and sculpture skills. During the camp, art participants will work on pieces to be included in an exhibition at the end of the week.

Space is still available in each camp, but pre-registration is required.

"Campers will spend a week working with thespians and artists who have made their careers in those fields and who we are fortunate to have on faculty here at Piedmont College," Crawford said.

"Attendees will also work with college students who are preparing to begin their careers in the arts. The children who attend these camps will come away more skilled in the craft they choose, with new friends and wonderful memories."
