Piedmont theater troupe presents 2 comedic mysteries

POSTED: May 26, 2011 12:30 a.m.

North Georgia Theatre at Piedmont College, a new professional theater company, is preparing for its first season of summer stock shows in June.

North Georgia Theatre is a new organization made up of actors, directors and technicians from the Northeast Georgia area, said Bill Gabelhausen, Department of Theatre chairman at Piedmont.

The troupe will begin the summer with a presentation of "Something's Afoot" by James McDonald, Davis Vos and Robert Gerlach. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. June 2-4 and June 9-11; and 2 p.m. June 5 and June 12, in the Swanson Center for Performing Arts and Communication.

Directed by Gabel-hausen, "Something's Afoot" is a musical comedy spoof based on Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians." A group of people are invited to the lake estate of Lord Dudley Rancour where the lord is found dead. It becomes a race against the clock to solve the murder mystery.

The second presentation is "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring and directed by professor John Spiegel. It will show at 7:30 p.m. June 16-18 and June 23-25; and at 2 p.m. June 19 and June 16 at the Swanson Center for Performing Arts and Communication.

"Arsenic and Old Lace" is a farcical black comedy centered around the drama critic, Mortimer Brewster. During the play, he debates his recent marriage proposal and learns his two aunts are homicidal maniacs who murder lonely old men with a glass of elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine and cyanide.

Brewster has two brothers — one who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal that serve as graves for his aunt's victims, and another brother is a murderer who has had plastic surgery to hide his identity.

Both plays are open to the community and general admission is $15. Piedmont faculty, staff and students are admitted free.

Plays are appropriate for all ages; however, they not recommended for small children due to run times.
