Northwinds to perform free concert for vets

POSTED: May 26, 2011 12:30 a.m.

It's easy to think of Memorial Day as just being a three-day weekend for most. But many have forgotten that the holiday represents the sacrifice of so many men and women in the armed forces in U.S. history.

Gainesville's own Northwinds Symphonic Band is planning to bring the focus of the holiday back Monday with its sixth annual Memorial Day Tribute to Veterans and Defenders of Freedom concert.

This year's performance, titled "America Remembers ..." will be conducted by Ronald J. Evans, as it has been for the past five years.

Evans expects a packed house, and if the past performances are any indication, he will likely get it.

"I would encourage everyone to come out. First of all, it's a free concert. But more importantly, it's a concert that almost every American can relate to. Either through friends or family, or personal experience, people can relate to it," Evans said.

The performance takes place at the First Baptist Church on Green Street in Gainesville. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m., although the crowd is encouraged to arrive early.

"Traditionally, the church has been filled to capacity, and now people have begun to arrive early to guarantee a seat," Evans said.

In addition to the music, the performance will honor two Hall County veterans with speeches for both.

World War II veteran Denver Truelove will be recognized in a speech given by Gordon Sawyer. Sawyer, himself a WWII vet, has written several books on Hall County history.

Vice-Commander of the Paul E. Bolding American Legion Dave Dellinger will speak in memory of World War I vet Paul E. Bolding.

Evans said that each military branch would be honored. Each branch's song will be played, and members and veterans of each will be asked to stand and be recognized.

"There should be a good turnout from the veterans in the area, probably 300 to 400," Evans said.
