This week: Richt, Fox coming to Gainesville

POSTED: May 16, 2011 12:19 a.m.

Fans are constantly clamoring for the opportunity to interact with their favorite school’s coaching staff. For local fans of the University of Georgia, that chance is Tuesday at the Gainesville Civic Center when the UGA Athletic Association and Office of Alumni Relations is holding UGA Day in Gainesville.

Bulldogs football coach Mark Richt and men’s basketball coach Mark Fox will be on hand, and fans will have the opportunity to get pictures, autographs, and then take in a program where the coaches will address the fanbase of the Bulldog Nation.

The program is hosted by longtime television sports anchor Chuck Dowdle, and registration is required. For more information, contact Meredith Carr 404-814-8820.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: The local field of playoff participants is down to one with only Buford still standing in Class AA. The Wolves (25-3) will host Pierce County (17-2) in a best-of-three state quarterfinal series beginning 4 p.m. Tuesday at Gerald McQuaig Field in Buford.

The Wolves are in the state quarterfinals for the first time since defeating Pike County in 2006. Meanwhile, Pierce County is no stranger to a deep playoff run. The Bears have advanced to the third round in four of the last five seasons, and lost to a school from Buford’s Region 6-AA is three of those trips.

So far in the playoffs, Buford has made things look easy with two-game home sweeps of series against Fannin County and Calhoun. The Wolves set up home-field advantage in the third round with a win against Blessed Trinity in the regular season finale, making the Titans a No. 2 seed to the postseason.

Meanwhile, Pierce County has also had a clean sweep of games in the playoffs so far. In round 1, the Bears traveled to Madison and defeated Morgan County in two games. Then in the second round, Pierce County defeated Berrien in two games.
