High college costs are borne by everyone who pays taxes

POSTED: May 11, 2011 1:00 a.m.

Martha Nesbitt's column on higher education still being affordable in Georgia exposes a failure in critical reasoning. She asserts that HOPE scholars pay tiny tuitions of just $0 to $145 per semester. This is misleading.

The fact is that these tuitions are heavily subsidized with tax money taken from the residents of the state, many of whom will never have a child in college. Sadly, this is exactly how all public school systems, county and college operate, on the backs of people whose money is taken from them by coercion in the form of taxation.

Just because a student in a state school gets in cheap doesn't mean the schooling is affordable. The costs are just secretly borne by victims of the tax collector.
