Your Views: Area community’s esteem for women is uplifting to all

POSTED: May 5, 2011 11:19 p.m.

Sunday's Times provided the treasure of a news article that uplifted. I am referring to the story, "Revived May Day tradition touches a nostalgic note from Gainesville's past," reporting that the Fair Street neighborhood has revived the May tradition of celebrating the women of their community.

Although I am not part of the Gainesville-Hall County African-American community, I am part of the community of womankind. What uplifts another woman's esteem uplifts me. What encourages another woman to strive for high values encourages me to do the same.

As a society, we seem to endlessly debate religion and family values. I think that holiness is wholeness; it is when we truly realize that we are part of all other human beings, and deeply realize that what is wholesome, positive and good for another is good for us.

This Mother's Day weekend celebration in the Fair Street-Newtown community makes us all stronger.

Thank you, and Happy Mother's Day to all.
