Your Views: To save gas, lower speed limit, then get rid of US Energy Department

POSTED: April 30, 2011 1:00 a.m.

In the 1970s, the president decreed that the national speed limit for cars and trucks would be 55 mph. The result: a 23 percent reduction in fuel consumption and, shortly afterward, a sharp reduction in fuel prices. The problem of fuel shortage was quickly resolved.

Since 1977, we have paid billions to fund a U.S. Department of Energy that now has 16,000 employees. The DOE mission: reduce dependence on foreign oil. In 1977, the U.S. used 30 percent foreign oil, now 70 percent. The DOE - a miserable failure

How about solving two problems in one easy step? Re-establish the 55 mph national speed limit and watch the foreign oil demand drop. Then dismantle a proven worthless DOE.
