Funnybone tickling for the whole family

Comedian Gregory to perform 2 shows Saturday at Holly Theatre

POSTED: April 28, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Good clean entertainment. That is the goal of comedian James Gregory.

Apparently, Gregory is doing something right because he is often referred to as the "Funniest Man in America."

Gregory has been doing stand-up for more than 20 years. He is regularly featured on more than 200 radio broadcasts from coast to coast, and has managed to set attendance records in many of the venues where he entertains.

Now Gregory is planning to entertain North Georgia during a double show Saturday at the Holly Theatre in Dahlonega.

"James is more of a humorist than a stand-up comedian. He has his own style and the fans love him," said Mark Thompson, Gregory's promoter.

According to Thompson, Gregory prefers small, quaint settings rather than large, impersonal venues.

"Years ago, James and I decided to do the smalltown venues. He loves going into 500-seat theatres because it's more intimate and personal. He always says, ‘I feel like I'm performing in a big living room,' and that's the way he likes it," Thompson said.

Both Thompson and the Holly Theatre think the shows will sell out. Originally, only one performance was scheduled, but another was added on Thursday in anticipation of a high turnout.

"I believe this is their third year coming here, and they have sold out each time in the past. We expect the same this year," said Geoffrey Kridel of the Holly Theatre.

Thompson explained that attending the show is suitable for the entire family, pointing out that he's seen three and even four generations of family at the shows.

"He's great because he keeps it clean. He can entertain anyone from a 13-year-old to a 90-year-old," Thompson said.

Shows are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are still available for both, and can be purchased by phone at 706-864-3759 or online.
