Modern music with a medieval flavor

Voices of North Georgia to perform ‘Carmina Burana’ based on classic poetry

POSTED: April 28, 2011 12:30 a.m.

Planning, practice and a government arts grant have made it possible for the Voices of North Georgia to perform "Carmina Burana" this weekend.

The musical composition was written by German composer Carl Orff in 1935, and is based on the medieval poetry compilation of "Carmina Burana."

The poems tell stories of the celebration of spring and of two young lovers who find romance. Orff composed music to match the events portrayed in the poetry.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Little Theatre at Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville.

Voices of North Georgia performed the concert eight years ago, according to Jean McCorlew, performer and membership chair of the group.

"When we did it eight years ago, it was a wonderful performance. It was one of the best concerts I've ever sang in," McCorlew said. "We're hoping the ones who missed it then won't miss it this time."

This year's concert will feature a vocal group of students from Enota Elementary in Gainesville, in addition to two grand pianos and a dance performance by a duo of Brenau University students.

"It's a modern performance, but it has more of a medieval flavor. We're very excited," McCorlew said. "This performance is a musical tapestry that will take you to another place."

The performance is a mesmerizing musical journey that will sweep our audience away to another time and place," McCorlew said.

A $1,000 arts grant from the state of Georgia helped get the production off the ground. The group has been rehearsing two hours a week at Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville since February to ensure the performance will be flawless.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, or by calling The Arts Council of Gainesville at 770-534-2787. General admission is $15, seniors and students $11, and children under 11 are $5.
