Deal names partner’s son to Board of Public Safety

Gainesville man also appointed to used car dealers board

POSTED: April 22, 2011 11:36 p.m.

Gov. Nathan Deal appointed two Hall County men to state boards Friday, including the son of one of his business partners.

Deal appointed Kacy Cronan, vice president of operations and sales for Gainesville Salvage and Disposal, to the Georgia Board of Public Safety.

The board, which oversees the Georgia State Patrol, Capitol Police and Motor Carrier Compliance Division, includes Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic and Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada.

Cronan, the founder and managing member of KC Transport Services LLC and founder of Cronan Contracting in Clermont, lives in Clermont with his family. He is the son of Ken Cronan, Deal's business partner in Gainesville Salvage and Disposal.

Deal faced public scrutiny during his campaign for using his congressional office and staff to help obtain zoning and permits for a landfill behind the Gainesville auto salvage business.

He also faced scrutiny for trying to intervene when the state moved to privatize the state salvage inspection program.

Deal was financially invested in the landfill until 2003. Deal and Chris Riley, his campaign manager and chief of staff, were involved in correspondence and meetings with Hall County and Georgia officials through 2008.

Documents show they met with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and state attorney general about the permitting of the landfill and with Hall County officials over the zoning of the property and a road that runs alongside it.

The project turned into a construction and demolition landfill. Construction of the landfill is slated to begin this year.

Deal also appointed Gainesville resident Mickey Farmer to the State Board of Registration of Used Car Dealers and Motor Vehicle Parts Dealers in an auto auctioneer position.

Farmer, who served 12 years in the Merchant Marines, has been an auctioneer for 25 years and is employed at five different auctions per week.

The 15-member board is composed of the Used Motor Vehicle Division and the Used Motor Vehicle Parts Division, which issue licenses to auction companies, pawnbrokers, parts dealers, rebuilders and salvage dealers.
