Car show spins a wheelie on cancer

Relay for Life benefit to feature survivors, awards, prizes

POSTED: April 21, 2011 1:00 a.m.

Car enthusiasts plan to show off their rides and rev up their engines for a good cause this weekend.

The second annual Cars for a Cure is scheduled Saturday at the United Community Bank in Lula. The benefit car show is designed to help raise money for Relay For Life of Hall County.

"Last year, we had over 150 cars. We're hoping to have even more this year," said Lindsey Richardson, an employee of the bank who helped to organize the event.

"We've already had a few calls from people in North Carolina who were hoping to pre-register."

Several awards will be given out at the show, including a "Survivor's Award," Richardson said. Those in attendance who have survived cancer will nominate their top choices.

There will also be a "Mayor's Choice" award, where Lula Mayor Milton Turner will announce his top pick. According to Richardson, approximately 40 awards will be given out.

In addition to the show, organizers plan to sell T-shirts and raffle tickets for door prizes.

"The bank is a big sponsor of Relay For Life, and it has been since I began working here three years ago," Richardson said.

Richardson pointed out that fundraising efforts are paying off in a big way.

"Last year we raised over $42,000, which is the largest amount we've raised for Hall County Relay for Life," Richardson said.

Organizers are hopeful that this year's Cars for a Cure will have an even greater turnout. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Country Living Ace Hardware, 4336 Ga. 365, Lula. There is a $20 entry fee per car, and donations will be accepted. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life of Hall County.
