The drizzle on Saturday morning didn’t keep dozens of runners from taking part in the inaugural Run For Recovery 5K put on by local attorneys.

The run benefits Friends of Recovery, a local nonprofit that provides support for participants in Hall County’s drug, family, mental health and DUI courts. The race was held by the Hall County Bar Association and Leadership Hall County.

"It was just a fantastic day. The weather could not squelch the spirit of supporting the recovery community," said Stephanie Woodard, a local attorney who is chairwoman of Friends of Recovery

She said some 160 people from across the state participated in the run, a turnout she called a success.

"It was a tremendous showing for our first race, especially in light of the weather forecast," Woodard said.

She said several area attorneys and judges not only took part in the race, but also volunteered to help out with the event. She also credited the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville Police Department for helping with the event, too. Other volunteers helping with the event also included participants in those courts helped by the Friends of Recovery.

"What a tremendous show of support from the community and a display of what a healthy lifestyle is for court participants. We were just thrilled," Woodard said.

She said the event raised about $2,500.

The overall winner of the event was John Van Steenbergh. The top women’s finisher was Bethany Griggs.

The race was affiliated with the Run and See Georgia Grand Prix, a calendar of races across the state that awards points for each event.
