Brown takes the lead at Chattahoochee

POSTED: March 25, 2011 11:23 p.m.

Brandon Brown hasn't won an NGA/Hooters Tour event in four years, but the former Eastern Kentucky standout has put himself in position to end that drought in the Charter Childhood Cancer Awareness Classic.

Brown, of Shelbyville, Ky., fired a 4-under-par 67 on Friday to move to 6-under for the tournament and take possession of first place.

Brown carded a 2-under 69 in the first round and holds a two stroke lead on Zach Sucher and James Vargas going into the third round today at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. Brown is scheduled to tee of at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Sucher, of Mobile, Ala., held a share of the lead after the first round at 3-under, but a 1-under 70 in the second round left the former University of Alabama-Birmingham star two shots behind and tied for second heading into Saturday.

Vargas, a past winner on the NGA/Hooters Tour out of the University of Florida, matched Brown's 67 and moved into a tie for second with Sucher at 4-under par.

Two-time NGA/Hooters Tour winner Jeff Corr, of Longwood, Fla., shot himself into contention by matching the low round of the day with a 4-under 67.

Corr is tied for fourth at 3-under along with Reid Edstrom, of Auburn, Ala.

Justin Smith, Andy Winings, Michael O'Neal, Vince Hatfield and Matthew Anderson are all at 2-under par and tied for sixth.

If Ted Potter is going to make it three straight wins on the NGA/Hooters Tour, he'll need to get moving Saturday. Potter is tied for 11th at 1-under.

Erik Barnes and seven others are tied for tenth place.
