Buford women do it all for civic-minded club

POSTED: March 24, 2011 12:30 a.m.

If you have a heart for volunteering, you might want to stop in at the next meeting of the Buford Lanier Woman's Club.

Linda Baggett, president of the club, said it helps more than 40 charities each year in the areas of arts, conservation, home life, international outreach and public issues.

"We are a charitable organization. We do work locally and globally," Baggett said.

Activities like reading to children at Buford-area libraries, teaching the community about drought-tolerant gardening and putting on a fundraiser fashion show are a few ways the club is helping its region - and that's just in March.

The Fashion Fling and Luncheon, a sold-out event set for Saturday, will benefit programs and projects supported by the club. It will feature fashions by Dillard's Mall of Georgia and a menu catered by club members.

The club, founded in 1923, is a 501 C3 nonprofit organization. It is a member of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. "We raise funds to give to various local charities and worldwide charities like C.A.R.E. and Operation Smile and Heifer International," Baggett said.

But on a local level, the club is involved in community projects like baking cookies for local policemen and firemen, "just anything that we feel we need to do in our community," said Baggett.

Most members are in their 40s and older, according to Baggett, so the club established the Lake Lanier Junior Woman's Club in 2009 to accommodate younger volunteers. That club is open to residents of North Gwinnett and South Hall.

To become a member of the Buford Lanier Woman's Club, women must pay dues of $50 per year and participate in three service projects annually.

Membership is open to all women living in Buford or the surrounding area.

Meetings are at 9:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of each month, except in July and August.
