You might think artists would think outside the box, but "All Boxed In," the current exhibit at the Sautee Nacoochee Center, proves that they can think inside it, too.

All kinds of boxes are featured in the exhibit, including ammunition boxes, cigar boxes and hand-turned wooden ones.

"The gallery committee comes up with different theme ideas, and this one was to encourage our juried gallery artists to come up with any kind of a box that they would like to decorate or transform into something else," said Jim Thomas, the center's gallery director.

Thomas said the idea came from past exhibits at the center that featured an item the artists turned into a work of art.

"In the past, we had a show called ‘Sit a Spell,'" said Thomas.

"Artists used some chairs that the gallery director at the time was able to obtain from a restaurant that was going out of business."

Another exhibit featured windows.

For "All Boxed In," more than 25 artists took to the challenge, creating something new out of something ordinary.

"I have one of my fiber artists, (Lucia Scroggs), who did a very attractive box. When you open it, there's a little fiber rose on the inside," Thomas said.

Another artist, Scott Knecht, transformed an ammunition box into a mixed media piece featuring a human figure called "The Pride Shrine."

Each exhibit at The Center Gallery also features an invitational artist. Bright floral watercolor works by Scottish artist Arlaine Morrison are paired with "All Boxed In," adorning the center's hallway.

"They are just absolutely beautifully done," Thomas said.

The next exhibit at the center will be "Fiber is Good for You," which will feature the gallery's fiber artists.
