This week: Hooters Tour returns to Chattahoochee

POSTED: March 21, 2011 12:44 a.m.

The fairways and greens at Chattahoochee Golf Club will be filled with professionals this week, as the National Golf Association, presented by Hooters of America, returns for the Charter Childhood Cancer Awareness Classic that starts today and ends Sunday.

A portion of the proceeds from the Charter Childhood Cancer Awareness Classic will go to benefit the Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer  Foundation.

The purse for all 2011 NGA Hooters Tour events will be $200,000 with $28,000 going to the winner.

“The No. 1 goal of the NGA/Hooters Tour has been and always will be to  help professional golfers achieve their dream of playing on the PGA  Tour,” said Robin L. Waters, NGA/Hooters Tour president. “Playing a course like the Chattahoochee Golf Club provides our professionals, as  many have commented, the same atmosphere they have experienced at many Nationwide Tour events. Everyone involved in this event should be proud  of what they’ve accomplished in making their event one of the premier events on our schedule.”

Last year, Travis Bertoni of Paso Robles, Calif., carded a final round  7-under par 64 at Chattahoochee Golf Club to capture his first career NGA/Hooters Tour title.

Qualifying rounds begin today. The four-round tournament tees off Thursday.

RIVALRY WEEK: Two of the biggest rivalries in Region 6-AA and 8-AAA occur on Friday, with the No. 3 Buford Wolves visiting first-place Greater Atlanta Christian, and the No. 6 Gainesville Red Elephants visiting North Hall.

Gainesville (7-2, 5-2) has games against Johnson and Stephens County to warm up for the Trojans (6-2, 5-1), whose win over White County earlier this year sparked a four-game win streak.

THE MADNESS CONTINUES: Bracket busted already? Well, that doesn’t mean the NCAA Tournament is over. Regional semifinal play picks up on Thursday, and the field of 16 will be whittled down to the Final Four by Sunday, with the semifinals and finals slated for April 2-4.
