Ga. 400 gets cable barrier in median

POSTED: April 20, 2008 5:02 a.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation last week installed a median on portions of Ga. 400.

"Crews began last Wednesday pouring the concrete pads that will run underneath the cable barrier in the median. Since that work began we’ve been getting calls asking ‘Why are you putting sidewalks in the median?’ so we wanted to assure you that it’s not sidewalks," said DOT District Engineer Russell McMurry.

Concrete pads will run underneath the cable barrier to support the cable system. The concrete will also eliminate the need for cutting the grass under the barrier.

The inside shoulder of Ga. 400 northbound is closed from McFarland Road to Ga. 306. No lanes are closed.

Cable barriers have previously been installed on more than 90 miles of Georgia interstates and freeways in which there are open center medians and has been instrumental in preventing cross-over wrecks, DOT officials said. Crews will work on Ga. 400 first and then move to Interstate 985 this summer, officials said. The completion date for cable barrier installation along both routes is Sept. 30.
