Gainesville fined $1,000 for sewage spills

POSTED: April 19, 2008 5:00 a.m.

The city of Gainesville has agreed to pay the Georgia Environmental Protection Division $1,000 for two minor sewage spills that occurred last year.

Kelly Randall, director of Gainesville Public Utilities, said the first incident happened Aug. 20 at the Quiet Place in the Woods subdivision. A crack in a 4-inch force main caused a sewage overflow of about 200 gallons, some of which got into an unnamed tributary of Lake Lanier.

The other spill occurred near Westminster school on Nov. 12. Randall said a support structure shifted position and caused a sewer line to crack, again spilling about 200 gallons. Some of the wastewater reached a tributary of Slaughterhouse Creek, which flows into Lanier.
