School bus wreck injures 2 adults

No children were on bus at the time

POSTED: March 18, 2011 11:41 p.m.

Authorities are investigating a collision between a Hall County school bus and a cargo van that injured two adults.

Hall County Schools spokesman Gordon Higgins said the accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Friday.

Bus driver Andrew Benefield was pulling out of the back drive of Johnson High School and onto Atlanta Highway.

"He was impacted by a cargo van heading north on the driver's side of the bus," Higgins said.

No students were on the bus at the time of the accident, but school system para-professional Clara Thorndike, who was on the bus, was injured and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

"She had some injuries to her knee and back, but at this time we don't know the extent of her injuries," Higgins said, adding that system transportation coordinator and safety director David Childers went to the scene.

Benefield was treated at the nedical center for broken glass in his arm.

According to a witness, the driver of the van failed to yield right-of-way at the traffic light intersection, which caused the accident, Higgins said.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision.
