Cornelia festival is for pets and their humans

POSTED: March 17, 2011 12:23 a.m.

Cornelia's Better Hometown will hold PetFest 2011, a family-friendly pet event, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the historic Community House in Cornelia.

The event is open to any well behaved pet, their humans and all animal lovers.

Activities include a pet parade at 12:30 p.m.; Pets Gone Wild reptile show and petting booth; North Georgia Zoo's Safari Show at 1:30 p.m.; an on-site rabies clinic; and "Ask the Vet" booth with Northeast Veterinary Hospital.

Also featured will be AKC Canine Good Citizen Testing with Hollie Autry; Cornelia Police Department K-9 Unit demonstration with "Cobra;" silly pet contests, including Best Easter Bonnet, Best Kisser, Best Trick, Pet/Owner Lookalike, Largest/Smallest Pet and Most Unusual Pet; mobile adoptions with Saving the Animals of Northeast Georgia; Habersham Humane Society; pet CPR demonstrations; raffles for prizes; pet vendors; and kids activities.

"This is going to be a really fun day for pet owners and animal lovers," Cornelia Better Hometown Manager Heather Sinyard said. "I'm very excited about the interest we've had from local businesses, area vets and the community for this event. I can't wait to bring my little corn snake out for the day in her Easter Bonnet!"

Registration for the parade and walk is $20, and includes a human T-shirt, a pet bandana, entry into all pet contests and goody bags while supplies last. Participating in the parade-walk only is $10 and includes a pet bandana while supplies last. Additional pets entered will be $5.

Pet games and contests are $1 per entry.

This event is a fundraiser for the Pet Friends Fund, which helps pay for free spay and neuter clinics in Cornelia and raise matching funds for an off-leash dog park planned in Cornelia.
