2011 Fowl Art Show features works that will represent Gainesville

POSTED: March 10, 2011 1:30 a.m.

Leading up to the Spring Chicken Festival on April 30, Gainesville frame shop Frames-You-Nique is having its own chicken-related festivities.

Beginning on Monday, you can stop by the gallery, located on the downtown Gainesville square, and take a look at the "Fowl Art Show," which will feature chicken-related works of art.

"It is a way for the artist community to contribute to (the festival,) and gives people that come something to do besides just eat and listen to music," said Don Griffin, owner of Frames-You-Nique.

Artists submitted pieces featuring chicken-related puns, or chickens in humorous situations. Last year, one artist’s work, called "Chicken a la King," included a chicken in a robe with a crown.

This year’s pieces are still under wraps, according to Griffin, until Monday’s opening.

Fifteen artists submitted entries, including Anne Brodie Hill, Mary Beth Steger, Tandy Ray and last year’s winner, Carmen Stolorena.

Griffin said a variety of artists entered the show, including some high school students.

A reception and awards ceremony for the show will be April 7 at the gallery, with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The public is invited to attend.

The winner will receive prize money, and their work will be featured on Spring Chicken Festival T-shirts.

Pieces will be available for purchase but will remain on display in the shop until April 30.
