Graves breaks ankle during ‘spirited’ game

House GOP group plays ball regularly

POSTED: March 5, 2011 12:24 a.m.

Rep. Tom Graves is recovering after breaking his ankle playing basketball Wednesday night with other Republican freshmen.

Graves' spokesman John Donnelly said the 9th District congressman was trying to beat Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp to the hoop at a Washington, D.C., gym that night. Graves jumped up, came down and hurt his left ankle.

Donnelly said an X-ray showed Graves suffered a broken ankle. More tests may be needed once the swelling in his foot recedes.

Graves has cleared his schedule for several days and will spend the weekend resting at his home in Ranger. Donnelly said Graves will be back in Washington by Tuesday in time for any votes in the U.S. House.

The group of Republican lawmakers are regulars on the basketball court, Donnelly said.

"It's a regular game that the House Republican freshman play. They usually convene in the evenings here at the House gym on Capitol Hill," Donnelly said. "The games are pretty spirited."

Huelskamp said in a statement that he stole the ball from Graves, who did not score.

Donnelly said Graves will be back on the court before long to seek his revenge.

"We'd like to get the word out that when Congressman Graves is back on his feet he'll make sure Congressman Huelskamp gets a front row seat to the dunk show."
