Trivia night helps Guest House

POSTED: February 17, 2011 1:30 a.m.

Taking a hint from the popularity of trivia at local nightlife venues and eateries, Rachel Spain decided that a trivia tournament would be a perfect way to raise needed funds for The Guest House.

"We had been involved in some of the trivia competitions in local restaurants in the area and had seen how that had taken off, and really provided another environment for families to get together and do something fun," said Spain, executive director of the private, nonprofit adult day health care center in Gainesville.

Kevin Gunter, general manager at Irish Bred Pub in Gainesville, agreed that local trivia games are becoming more family oriented. Trivia is played at the pub on Wednesday night with Outspoken Entertainment.

"It's growing in popularity because of families," he said. "We've seen a lot of whole families getting involved because the kids can contribute to a lot of the questions. It's something you can do while eating dinner and perfect for a single person or a table of 10."

The Hall County Trivia Tournament to benefit the Guest House is set for Saturday night.

"Teams are allowed to be a maximum of eight people," Spain said. "Once you get to the Elks Lodge, we will have some of our hosts there that will actually direct you to the gentleman that is doing DJ Trivia. He will walk through everything with you.

"You set up teams and creative team names, then he actually keeps the score. At the end of the night, we'll be giving away prizes for different restaurants and activities around town."

The event is $10 per person and children age 10 and younger are free. The Elks Lodge will have dinner and drinks available for purchase.

"I have encouraged people to go ahead and bring their children," said Spain.
