Led by 30 points from Lauren Smith, the Young Harris women’s basketball team used a last-minute lay-up to earn coach Brenda Paul her 450th career win by defeating Reinhardt 59-53 on Monday at the Brown Athletic Center. Lindsey Hammontree (six points) made a lay-up with 46 seconds left to put Young Harris ahead for good.

Smith also pulled down nine rebounds for Young Harris (9-13), while Nikki Winn, a Towns County High graduate, added 11 points. The Lady Mountain Lions return to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Baseball

TRUETT-MCONNELL 9, TOCCOA FALLS 8: Jacob Brewster, a North Hall graduate, came on in the eighth inning and earned the win Tuesday in Cleveland.

Brewster threw a scoreless inning and the Bears rallied thanks to a two-run double from sophomore Ross Roberts in the bottom half to reclaim the lead for good. Truett-McConnell (9-3) will open at three-game series with Reinhardt at 4 p.m. Friday in Waleska.

Softball

North Georgia’s second-ranked softball team played their home opener on Tuesday afternoon, beating Mars Hill 10-0 and 8-2 in a doubleheader sweep in non-conference action in Dahlonega.
The Saints (9-0) will open the UAH Charger Chillout weekend classic on Friday afternoon against Barry University and Arkansas Tech, two of six weekend games scheduled in Decatur, Ala.

Tennis
BRENAU WOMEN’S TENNIS 7, NGCSU 2: Led by four singles wins, the Lady Golden Tigers won Tuesday in Dahlonega.

Hannah Thompson, Liubov Orlova, Eline Nagels and Nelli Martirosyan each won in straight sets for Brenau (1-1), which also swept doubles 3-0.

Brenau hosts No. 3 Emory University at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Brenau Tennis Center.

North Georgia received singles wins from Laura Chapman and Stasa Vyjosevic for its only points of the day.

The Lady Saints (2-1) visit UNC-Pembroke at noon Friday.
