POSTED: February 1, 2011 3:24 p.m.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety announced seat belt road checks, orchestrated as part of its Operation Thunder campaign in Hall County, netted arrests and motor vehicle violations in its first week.

The statistics highlighted in a prepared release on the task force’s totals since announcing its campaign Thursday: 23 drunken drivers and 46 motorists who were driving illegally on suspended licenses.

“That’s 23 drunk drivers who could have killed the people you know and love on your local roadways right here at home,” said Director Harris Blackwood of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in a prepared statement.

Officers nabbed another 12 motorists for driving without any insurance, cited 40 motorists for safety belt law violations and another 14 for breaking child passenger laws.

Operation Thunder is scheduled to continue in Hall County 85 more days.

Plus, officers working with the task force made eight drug arrests and two felony arrests while apprehending a couple fugitives. Officers also wrote 125 citations for infractions like expired driver licenses, missing tags and safety equipment violations.
