The thread of art: Textile design show comes to NGCSU

POSTED: January 20, 2011 12:30 a.m.

The Bob Owens Art Gallery at North Georgia College and State University is taking a fresh look at a very old tradition: textile design.

Most people may know the practice by other names, like quilting and sewing. Whatever name you give it, examples can be seen in the gallery's latest exhibit, "New Traditions in Textiles."

Jo-Marie Karst, a textiles instructor at the college, is the curator behind the exhibit. It features current work of textile artists from around North Georgia. The artists have combined traditional techniques with contemporary ones to create modern takes on designing textiles.

The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 11. There will be a reception and awards ceremony at 5 p.m. Feb. 3. Karst will also be leading a discussion about textile traditions that same day at 6 p.m.

The gallery is located at 315 Student Center on the college's Dahlonega campus. It is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 3 to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, the gallery can be reached at 706-867-2746.
