Benefit starts year off with a bash

POSTED: December 29, 2010 11:11 p.m.

New Year's Eve parties are not hard to find, especially if you're searching out of town.

However, New Vision Entertainment Services and Ride for Gary combined to bring their New Year's Eve Benefit Party to you — a celebration with the flare of any great holiday party, only you don't have to drive hours to get there.

"We wanted people to have a choice of something to do in the Gainesville area rather than just going out and getting drunk," said Xavier Gomez of New Vision Entertainment Services.

The benefit sponsors Ride for Gary, an organization created by Bill Mueller to help out his brother, Gary, who was tragically paralyzed from the chest down in a March 2009 accident.

"My goal with this benefit is to help out Gary Mueller. He is an ex-firefighter that got hurt off the job. Because of this, his insurance is not helping him out with many things," Gomez said. "His Brother, Bill, started up Ride For Gary to help raise money for a special needs van from AMS Vans, Inc."

In October, Mueller started "One Wheel, One Day, One Hundred Miles," where he pledged to ride his unicycle to raise money for his brother's needs. He completed his mission; still, there are not enough funds for the van.

"This event is to help out one of those that has always given unselfishly to people," Gomez said. "Firefighters, police officers and military personnel are always giving all that they have for people they don't even know."

All proceeds from the benefit go to Ride for Gary.

"This will help them get closer to the cost of the van so that Gary can get around on his own and Bill can return to a better job himself,' he said. "Bill has moved in with Gary to help him and take care of his needs since the accident."

The benefit will have live music, door prizes, food and dancing.

"We'll have performances by Wyld Cheri, The 5 Senses and an Elvis impersonator," he said. "Bill Mueller will perform an exhibition on his unicycle, we have dinner around 8 o'clock and there will be a raffle for a Jasmine 6 string acoustic guitar — there is something for everyone."

On top of all that, there will also be a DJ hosting the event.

"This is mainly for those that wanted something different for New Year's," he said. "We are gearing this event toward an audience that didn't want to go to Atlanta, but wanted to hear live music, that didn't want to wait in line at a restaurant but wanted good food, that wanted to help someone out while having a good time."

New Year's Eve Benefit Party gives us a chance to have a great time while also helping out someone who has given back so much to our community.

"We were almost ready to cancel this event due to lack of interest, but once people hear about it, I don't think it could be turned down," Gomez said. "My church always talks about how we should be willing to help out others and give back to others the blessings we have received. This event is letting me walk the walk."
