2 traffic fatalities reported

POSTED: December 8, 2010 12:39 a.m.

A 49-year-old Hoschton woman died in a Monday morning one-vehicle wreck on Ga. 124 near Ga. 60.

Veronica Elinski was killed in the crash, which occurred just before 11 a.m., according to the Georgia State Patrol.

According to witnesses, the driver lost control and the vehicle left the roadway.

A medical emergency may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, said Steve Nichols, director of Jackson County Emergency Services.

Elinski's Ford Explorer ran off the side of the road, struck a street sign and came to rest in a ditch along the highway, according to GSP reports. Jackson County Coroner Keith Whitfield is investigating the case.

Another recent traffic-related death is also under investigation.

On Nov. 30, a two-vehicle wreck was reported on Ga. 53 just before 6 p.m. In that accident, Michael Oncay, 21, of Braselton was a passenger in a 1997 Dodge 1500 pickup driven by James Comer of Jefferson.

According to the Braselton Police Department report of the wreck, a 2011 Kenworth driven by Dale R. Pittman Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., was traveling on Ga. 53 and made a left turn into the Pilot station in front of a truck driven by Comer.

The Dodge struck the big rig. The rig's driver, who was cited for failure to yield the right of way, told police he thought he struck a sign and was unaware his truck had been hit.

Oncay, who was wearing a seat belt, complained of an injury to his arm. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where his parents indicated he was treated for a broken arm and a head injury and released.

His parents took him home and monitored him through the night, but at about 5:30 a.m. the mother awoke to find Oncay was no longer snoring and he was cold to the touch.

Jackson County medical unit personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Oncay was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical where he was pronounced dead.
