Holiday history comes alive at Civil War event

Gwinnett Heritage Center event set for Saturday at McDaniel Farm

POSTED: December 2, 2010 12:30 a.m.

The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center, through its History & Culture Program, invites you to step back in time and participate in some unique holiday traditions from the past.

Its Civil War Holiday event is set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at McDaniel Farm, 3251 McDaniel Farm Road in Duluth.

"One of the goals of the History & Culture Program is to make the past come alive," said Catherine Long, Program Manager. "This is a great opportunity for families to see life in Gwinnett as it was in 1862. Participants will have the chance to relive the experiences of E.W. and A.W. McDaniel as they are home from the War for Christmas furlough."

Guests may engage in a drill with Civil War soldiers and visit their campsite. They can also make traditional holiday ornaments for the soldiers' tree as well as their own.

In addition, there will be carols, a visit by Father Christmas and an opportunity to learn about the McDaniel family's history.

Admission is $5 per person.

"This will be a great way to kick off the holiday season, especially for the history buff," Long said.
