North Georgia Chamber Symphony hits the road

The North Georgia Chamber Symphony has scheduled a series of four holiday concerts in four different Northeast Georgia cities.

The North Georgia Chamber Symphony has scheduled a series of four holiday concerts in four different Northeast Georgia cities, including Gainesville, during the first few days of December.

The concert series begins in Dawsonville at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2. at the Bowen Center for the Arts. Other events are planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at the Old Courthouse on the Square in Blairsville; 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gainesville; and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at Dahlonega United Methodist Church.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The programs include a variety of classical and popular selections, such as "The Nutcracker Suite" by P. I. Tchaikovsky and "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin.

Special guest performers will be the North Georgia Children's Chorus conducted by Janey Chapman and Ruth Purcell. The group will also lead in the singing of Christmas carols.

Laurin Smith, who formed the orchestra and has been its director and conductor since that time, studied extensively in the New York area.
