Bremen tops Commerce, 34-24

Tigers fall in Class A playoffs in final game for coach Steve Savage

The Commerce High football team fell 34-24 to Bremen in the first round of the Class A state playoffs Friday night at Bremen Athletic Field.

The loss was the last game at the helm for Tigers' coach Steve Savage, who will retire after 22 years as head coach.

Trailing 21-10 going into the fourth quarter, Commerce scored twice, once on a 5-yard run from quarterback Cody Streetman and again on an 85-yard kickoff return from Terrick Ramsey.

But the Commerce defense couldn't stop the Blue Devils, who put 13 points on the board in the final frame to take the victory.

Streetman finished the night with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Commerce would score first in the game as Streetman rumbled in from 16 yards out for the only points of the opening quarter to make it 7-0, Commerce.

Josh Swistak would add a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Tigers, but the Blue Devils would find themselves in the end zone twice in the period to take a 14-10 lead into halftime.

The Tigers went scoreless in a third quarter which saw Bremen get into the endzone once to take a 21-10 lead going into the final frame.

Commerce finished the game with 276 yards of offense, compared to Bremen's 318.

Steetman only completed one pass on the night, an 18-yard strike to Anthony Norris.

With the loss, Commerce fell to 5-6 overall to give Savage only his second losing season as coach of the Tigers.
