Red Elephants back in top 10

POSTED: October 5, 2010 2:29 p.m.

Gainesville High returned to the Class AAA top 10 rankings in this week’s Georgia Prep Football Poll, conducted by The Associated Press.

The ninth-ranked Red Elephants began the season at No. 6, but slid out of the poll after losing to Buford in their opener. Since then, Gainesville has won four straight, including last week’s 62-20 win over Johnson. The Red Elephants (4-1, 1-0 8B-AAA) will play at Oconee County (1-4, 0-1) on Friday. Subregion foe Monroe Area (5-0, 1-0) entered the poll this week at No. 10.

Other local teams in the top 10 include Flowery Branch (No. 6 in Class AAAA) and Buford (No. 2 in Class AA). Both held the same spots in last week’s polls.

Flowery Branch (5-0, 5-0 8-AAAA) was off last week and plays at Habersham Central (2-4, 2-4) on Friday. Buford (5-1, 1-0 6A-AA) defeated Decatur 42-7 last week and will play host to Clarkston (0-5, 0-1) on Friday.
