Sammons has three-hit game

POSTED: September 1, 2010 11:37 p.m.

Clint Sammons had three hits and an RBI to lead Gwinnett despite a 6-2 loss to the Norfolk Tides on Wednesday at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Va.

Barbaro Canizares added two hits and two runs to up his league-leading average to .340 for the Triple-A G-Braves.

Norfolk jumped all over Braves starter Erik Cordier (0-1), who was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A Mississippi.

The Tides chased Cordier after just eight batters, as the 24-year-old yielded two hits and four walks while throwing 41 pitches - 19 of which were strikes.

Rhyne Hughes had an RBI single off Cordier to get the Tides on the board, and Michel Hernandez added a two-run double.

After back-to-back walks forced Cordier from the game, Miguel Abreu greeted reliever Cory Gearrin with a two-run single - Abreu’s first career Triple-A hit - to cap the first inning scoring.

The first inning outburst was more than enough run support for Tides starter Tim Bascom (4-7), who turned in his second straight strong outing in helping Norfolk win its second consecutive contest over the Braves. Bascom allowed one run on two walks and six hits in six innings, striking out three.
