Members of the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center's chapter of the Red Hat Society sit at Red Lobster to celebrate their fifth anniversary.

The Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center’s chapter of the Red Hat Society gathered Feb. 7 at Red Lobster to celebrate their fifth anniversary. The group, which started with 14 members, has now grown to about 50. The ladies enjoy a monthly outing as part of the group, as well as participating in community service projects. For more information, contact the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center at 770-503-3331. Nancy Simpson is the "Queen Mother" of the group.

The Colonel William Candler chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its first-ever Georgia Day celebration on Feb. 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. Guest speaker was Terry Manning, who spoke about the battle of Kettle Creek, a Revolutionary War battle fought in Georgia. 

Army Pvt. Derek Glenn has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Glenn is the son of Dwight Glenn of Gainesville.

Marine Corps Pvt. Gavin C. Owenby, son of Grace J. Owenby of Toccoa, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Little-Davenport Funeral Home and the Hall County Fire Services collected more than 650 pounds of canned and boxed food as part of a community food drive held in January. The items helped to replenish the Chattahoochee Baptist Association food bank.

Girl Scout Jenny Sheppard of Oakwood recently earned her Silver Award. For her project she led volunteers in creating and painting 50 duffel bags and filling them with toys and books. The bags were given to the Gateway Domestic Violence Center. Sheppard is a ninth-grader at West Hall High School and is the daughter of Pat and Randy Sheppard.

Navy Seaman Zebulon S. Bare, son of Eddie G. Bare of Gainesville, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Bare is a 2006 graduate of Chestatee High School of Gainesville.

Marine Corps Pfc. Rafael Frias Vera, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Frias of Clarkesville, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his current rank. Frias Vera is a 2007 graduate of Habersham Central High School of Demorest.

Army Pvt. Michael Delgado has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Roy and Susan Davis of Jefferson. The private is a 2007 graduate of Jackson County Comprehensive High School in Jefferson.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph R. Shuler has been deployed in support of the war in Iraq. He is the son of Kathy Stancil of Alto. The sergeant is a 2000 graduate of Banks County High School in Homer.
