A long-awaited sewer project got Oakwood City Council’s OK Monday night.

The council voted to contract with Strickland & Sons Pipeline Inc. of Gainesville to install a force main sewer line along Winder Highway to Jackson County, connecting with the Braselton sewer system.

The project is estimated to cost $2.1 million.

In a separate job related to the same project, work is under way on a $1.1 million pump station on Martin Road, off Winder Highway.

Ultimately, as part of the agreement, Oakwood would receive as much as 2.5 million gallons of sewer per day from Braselton.
The issue had some conflict, however, as one of the other bidders, Gary’s Grading and Pipeline Co., had filed a protest based on a couple of different issues with the bidding.

The council went into a closed-door session before the vote to approve Strickland as the contractor. Governmental bodies can meet privately to discuss potential litigation, according to state law.
