Helicopter crash in Lumpkin kills 2

Wreckage found near Blood Mountain; Florida man and unidentified passenger killed

POSTED: August 6, 2010 11:28 p.m.

The wreckage of a helicopter carrying two occupants that was missing since Monday night was found Friday in a heavily wooded area of Lumpkin County. There were no survivors.

Adam Reeves, 45, of Jupiter, Fla., was killed in the crash of the Robinson R44 helicopter, said Maj. Paige Joyner, a spokeswoman for the Civil Air Patrol's Georgia Wing. A passenger whose identity was not being released by officials also was killed.

About 50 people searched on the ground and in the air since Wednesday for the small, bright yellow helicopter, which was last seen refueling at a small airport in Madison Monday night.

It was reported missing Wednesday and volunteers searched an area of about 1,000 square miles from Madison to Blairsville, where the aircraft was due Monday night, Joyner said.

The helicopter was found about 2:30 p.m. Friday by an aerial and ground search team, Joyner said.

Finding the small aircraft beneath the cover of the treeline was difficult for searchers, she said.

"If you think of a needle in a haystack, multiply that times a thousand," Joyner said.

The scene was turned over to local authorities and officials with the National Transportation Safety Board, which will conduct a crash investigation.

Lumpkin County Coroner Larry Bannister said the wreckage was in Blood Mountain cove off U.S. 129 in the northern portion of the county.

The Palm Beach Post reported that Reeves, who owned a Florida health care company, first got his pilot's license in September 2009. He was traveling to Georgia to stay at the Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa, the newspaper reported.
