Riverside advances to elite eight

Riverside Military Academy’s basketball team won its Georgia Independent Schools Association playoff opener 66-46 over First Presbyterian Day School on Thursday in Macon. With the win, the Eagles (13-11) advance to state quarterfinals to face the Westminster Christian-Sherwood Christian winner at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Georgia Southwestern in Americus.

On Thursday, Joseph Lister led Riverside Military with 19 points and Charlie Riley added 18. Steven Frady finished with 11 for the Eagles.

Riverside Military led 16-13 after the first quarter, and managed to extend their lead to 34-21 at halftime.

West Hall boys 6, White County 0

Juan Arbelaez and Christian Suarez each had a goal and two assists on Thursday night in Oakwood. Rudy Vasquez, Tino Vasquez, Felix Ramirez and Fernando Magana also scored for the Spartans (1-1-2).

Jamie King, Christian Suarez and Alex Munoz combined for the shutout in goal with eight saves for West Hall.

Luis Cervantes, Garson Megia played well on defense for the Spartans. Chris Lewis stopped the Warriors with strong play in the midfield.

West Hall visits Gilmer at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Ellijay.

Brenau cliches spot in SSAC championships

The Golden Tigers (16-11, 8-9 Southern States Athletic Conference) secured a spot in the conference championship with a 73-62 win over Reinhardt College on Thursday night in Gainesville. With the win, Brenau faces an opponent still to be determined on March 6-8 in Cleveland, Tenn.

On Thursday, the Golden Tigers won behind a season-high 49 percent shooting from the field, and hit 17-22 from the free throw line.

Sarah Ledford led the Golden Tigers with 26 points and six rebounds, and Buford High grad Vicky Wilson scored 16. Paige Cooper finished the game with 11 for Brenau.

The Golden Tigers are assured a winning-record on the season in only their second year playing.

Brenau plays host to No. 2 ranked Lee University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
