Arson blamed in house fire

POSTED: February 27, 2008 5:02 a.m.

A fire that destroyed an unoccupied home early Tuesday in Clermont was intentionally set, fire officials said Friday.

The 1,400-square-foot home located at 7049 H. White Road was owned by Scott Harkins, who had the property up for sale at the time fire broke out around 3:30 a.m., Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said.  The home had nearly burned to the ground by the time firefighters were alerted and responded. The house was destroyed, with an estimated loss of $100,000, Cagle said.

In the debris of the fire, investigators found items that had been stolen from an adjacent property and used to start the fire, Cagle said.

He did not say what the items were.

“We are officially calling it an arson,” Cagle said.

Officials are asking anyone with information about the fire to call the Hall County Fire Marshal’s Office at 770-531-6838.
