Jackson County: U.S. 129 traffic to shift Monday

From staff reports

POSTED: February 26, 2008 5:00 a.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to shift traffic on U.S. 129 Monday as it widens the highway from the Jefferson Bypass to Ga. 330 in Jackson County.

Weather permitting, traffic will be routed over to the lanes that will eventually be the two southbound lanes, said DOT District Engineer Russell McMurry. "For now only one lane will be for southbound traffic from the Jefferson Bypass to (Ga. 330). One lane will be for northbound traffic."

DOT officials estimate that the project will be completed by June 30 with a construction cost of more than $21 million.

Lanes will also be closed on Interstate 85 northbound from Interstate 985 to the Ga. 20 exit.

"DOT contractors will be paving the inside shoulder of I-85 from I-985 to (Ga. 20) this weekend," McMurry said. "As weather permits, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. crews will close the inside or left lane of the interstate from I-985 to (Ga. 20)."

On Sunday, crews will close the inside or left lane again to finish paving. Two lanes will be open on I-85 north this weekend as the work occurs. Delays are expected in the area as this work occurs.
