Scott Glover, owner of Glo-Crest Dairy in Cleveland, was recently named Young Breeder of the Year by the Georgia Holstein Association at the group’s annual meeting in Macon.

Glover also received awards for milk production and fat content. Scott breeds registered cows under the "Que Sera Sera" prefix at Glo-Crest Dairy. One of the first heifers to carry the Que Sera Sera preface was sold at the Southern Invitational and went on to be successfully shown throughout the country, including the World Dairy Expo.

Glover lives in Clermont with his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Eliza Jane.

Local 4-Hers recently participated in the District level of Project Achievement. There were 12 junior 4-H members (seventh- and eighth-graders) and 13 senior 4-H members (ninth- through 12th-graders), and the competition took place at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.

To qualify for this , students had to submit in January a written portfolio of their project work, project sharing, community service and leaderships activities in January. For the District competition, the junior 4-Hers prepared a speech no longer than 10 minutes, along with posters and other visual aids. The senior 4-Hers prepared speeches no longer than 12 minutes, along with posters and/or power point presentations and other visual aids.

First-place winners will compete at the state level competition to be held in July in Atlanta, where first-place winners earn the title of Master 4-Her.

The following junior 4-Hers placed in the competition:

First place: Joshua Butler, Physical, Biological and Earth Science; Savannah Ledford, Beef; Gabby Nelms, Photography; Robbie Sheppard, Outdoor Recreation.

Second place: Grace Coley, Dog Care & Training

Third place: Trent Collins, General Recreation; Jenna VanNostrand, Festive Foods for Health; Courtney Woodard, Horse

Fourth place: Ashley Andrews, Dairy and Milk Science; Anna Minor, Wildlife; Kia Shields, History

Eighth place: Shanicka Stephens, Performing Arts, Instrumental

The following senior 4-Hers placed in the competition:

First place: Kaitlyn Head, Dog Care & Training; Sydney Roach, International

Second place: Liz French, Health; Tyler Williams, Computer

Third place: Jared Lee, Wildlife & Marine Resources; Haley Woodard, Horse; John Washington, History

Fourth place: Hannah Niles, Wildlife & Marine Resources

Fifth place: Jenny Sheppard, Human Development

Eighth place: John Hayes, Performing Arts, General; Selena Ledford, Arts & Crafts

Ninth place: Emily Linto, Horse

Tenth place: Laura Hilley, Performing Arts, Dance

Bonnie Woods recently was crowned Ms. New Horizons West 2010 in the long-term-care facility’s annual Resident Beauty Pageant.

Willie Mae Forrester, reigning 2009 Ms. New Horizons West, was on hand to crown the new queen.

Kathy Barker was crowned first runner-up, and Pat Allen was recognized as second runner-up. Thirteen lovely and excited contestants participated in the contest, with each contestant winning a special title.

Woods’ name and profile will be submitted to the Georgia Health Care Association, and she will have a chance at being selected to participate in the Ms. Georgia Nursing Home event in April.

Haley Woodard, an 11th-grader at East Hall High School, and Robbie Sheppard, a seventh-grader at West Hall Middle School, have been elected to the Northeast District board of directors for 4-H.

They will replace Jenny Sheppard, a junior at West Hall High School, who has served as the board of directors representative for the past year; her term will expire in June, when the new officers will be installed.

Jessica Abe of Dawson County High School was one of 12 area students who recently received a $3,500 Youth Program Scholarship from the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation.

Started in 2006, the program has awarded $126,000 to 40 high school students seeking to continue their education at a college or university. For more information on the scholarship, visit www.sawnee.com/round_up or call 678-455-1539.
